About Eldor OEM
You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your VAG are not necessarily manufactured by VAG. No cause for concern, as VAG designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for VAG for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Eldor, Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine VAG parts box and find an OEM branded part inside! This allows you to buy OEM quality products with peace of mind.
What Are Direct Ignition Coil Packs?
Direct ignition coils are located directly over the top of the spark plug. In this ignition setup there is one ignition coil per spark plug and there are no spark plug wires. This ignition setup is often referred to as a coil on plug ignition system.
Coil on plug or direct ignition systems are pretty much used on all modern cars due to packaging, performance, emissions, and maintenance reasons. This ignition system is essentially maintenance free with the exception of spark plug replacements and the occasional coil replacement when compared to a traditional ignition system.
Signs Your Coil Packs Are Failing
- Random misfires or “stutter” when you step on it
- Rough idle that makes the car feel shaky
- Check-Engine Light, often with a P0300-style code
- Poor fuel economy and sluggish throttle response
- Sulfur/Burning-plastic smell under the hood after a hard pull
Pro Tip: Pair your new coils with the EQT Coil Grounding Kit. It adds a clean, low-resistance ground path, fixing pesky ground faults and cutting coil-swap time in half—perfect for track-day prep or quick driveway maintenance.
How Often Should You Replace Coil Packs?
For tuned MQB and MQBe vehicles we generally recommend that coil packs be replaced every 20,000 miles.
If the vehicle is used primarily on track or driven very hard we sometimes may recommend more frequent coil pack changes every 10,000 miles.
If you suspect one of your coil packs may be faulty based on the symptoms above, it is best practice to go ahead and replace one or all of your coil packs.
